    Chandra Resolves A Galactic Mystery
Boston, UK (SPX) May 01, 2009
An extremely deep Chandra X-ray Observatory image of a region near the center of our galaxy has resolved a long-standing mystery about an X-ray glow along the plane of the galaxy. The glow in the region covered by the Chandra image was discovered to be caused by hundreds of point-like X-ray sources, implying that the glow along the plane of the galaxy is due to millions of such sources. ... read more *New* Comments: 0

Herschel's High-Tech Cooling System Loaded With Helium
Kourou, French Guiana (SPX) Apr 24, 2009
The Herschel space telescope for Arianespace's next Ariane 5 mission literally "chilled out" this week with the loading of liquid helium that will help it gather data on the formation of stars and galaxies. A total of 2,300 liters of liquid helium will be carried inside a cryostat, keeping the temperature of Herschel's scientific instrument detectors close to absolute zero (-273 degrees C) ... read more *New* Comments: 0

Largest Collection Of Anomalous White Dwarfs Seen In New Hubble Images
San Francisco CA (SPX) Apr 27, 2009
Twenty-four unusual stars, 18 of them newly discovered, have been observed in new Hubble telescope images. The stars are white dwarfs, a common type of dead star, but they are odd because they are made of helium rather than the usual carbon and oxygen. This is the first extensive sequence of helium-core white dwarfs to be observed in a globular cluster, a dense swarm of some of the oldest ... read more *New* Comments: 0
